fine china in bloom

the inspiration and process behind our spring 2023 window displays

like the clothing they showcase, our store windows are works of art in and of themselves. now spanning not two, but three windows, this spring's displays are especially stunning. featuring large-scale florals and vintage china motifs layered against hand-painted canvas panels, we hope they spark a sense of renewal and joy.

our talented window designer, katherine, is the creative mastermind behind these beautiful displays. inspired by the bold florals and fresh colors of the spring collections, katherine wanted the windows to feel playful and fun, hinting at the relaxing atmosphere of our store and the transformative nature of a new season (and a new outfit!). her initial concept started with some of the quirkier colors from our spring curation - pistachio, chartreuse, peach, lilac, and ochre - as well as our "wear the fine china" campaign, which encourages incorporating special pieces into your everyday wardrobe. from there, the idea of a large-scale floral collage with motifs taken directly from fine china patterns emerged.

over the past few months, katherine, who has a background in floral design and studied fiber arts while getting her MFA in studio art at JMU, has been hard at work painting, cutting, and stitching on craft paper to create the flowers, branches, and birds on display. each handmade element is hung individually and carefully layered to give the installation depth and texture, echoing the semi-sheer layers and textural details featured prominently in the spring 2023 collections.

playful shoes and accessories are displayed alongside mannequins dressed in bold colors, all nestled into the floral landscape. look closely to see katherine’s thoughtful design flourishes, like intricate stitch work and expressive paint strokes, that bring the windows to life!

“fine china in bloom” will be on display through may 2023.
