so fine : a spring jewelry spotlight

no matter the material -- iridescent stones, tahitian pearls, gold, diamonds -- the jewelry at scarpa this spring is all about application and rigorous detail:  ever-so-delicate insets, silk bands woven and knotted with silver, hammered surfaces, and plenty of pave.  here we feature some of the pieces that embody this attention to craftsmanship, including wares from designers new to us this season.

a statement (& then some)

chances are if you've heard of deepa gurnani, you may be more familiar with the headbands that put the label on the map five years or so ago.  as the brand has expanded, their offerings have come to include a wide array of jewelry and accessories.  the design team consists of deepa and her husband, and between the two of them, they boast an impressive range of design experience.
deepa studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where she beaded couture pieces for Alexander McQueen and Fendi.  Her husband and design partner Jay Lakhani trained under head designers at Tiffany and Bulgari.  Needless to say, these two have worked with some of the best, so it comes as no surprise that their eponymous label offers some truly exquisite pieces.
we're all probably quite familiar with the "statement" necklace as a constantly revisited trend.  i'd venture to say deepa gurnani has taken the statement necklace to another level, especially with these spring offerings.  objets d'art without the couture price tag?  it may be hard to say no. . .

happening now: tara compton fine & estate jewelry trunk show

this week in the store, capi's friend tara compton is having a trunk show of her fine & estate jewelry.  of the many incredible pieces, standouts include a one of a kind yossi harari 24 karat gold & diamond bracelet, a 19th century 18 karat gold ring with hand carved green, brown, and white chalcedony, and a unique gucci bracelet with a carved horn pendant.  watching tara set up shop today was like witnessing a fabulous magician brandish endless wonders from a hat.  just when I thought she had placed the last exquisite cocktail ring on its stand, another case of rings would emerge. . .

Tara has also generously donated a necklace to the critter ball for the charlottesville-albemarle SPCA.  She will be set up at Scarpa until Saturday; stop by before then!
